More than two centuries ago, the citizens of Charleston realized their dream by establishing a college that would prepare future leaders through traditional instruction in the liberal arts. As the oldest institution of higher learning in South Carolina and the first municipal college in the nation, the College of Charleston has since played a vital role in educating young men and women from the city, the state and beyond. And as a central influence in the cultural and commercial evolution of Charleston, the College has helped shape the character of a unique and beloved city.We had an annual picnic, with rifle shooting for prizes. My class graduated in 1860. At that time the commencement exercises were conducted almost entirely by the graduating class and the students. The first honor man ... highest in the class. These men delivered essays or addresses on any subject they chose to select.
